A Shift in the Car Buying Journey?

Toyota is using Augmented Reality to power a new car buying experience. Through its partnership with Saatchi & Saatchi and Vertebrae, Toyota used AR to reach its entire audience with a full line-up of vehicles. Buyers are given a digital experience that is much closer to experiencing a real vehicle than any video or imagery could ever provide.

Overview:

Toyota launched an immersive AR experience on the web that brings virtual vehicles to consumers across the US – no app needed. Using transformative 3D and AR technology, Toyota is virtually bringing 10 of its vehicles to consumers so they can explore the vehicle’s exterior in detail placed in their environment right on their smartphone. Unlike other big brands who rely on a shopper to open their app to experience AR, Toyota is bringing the experience directly to their audience via web banners and Facebook ads on the web.

How it Works:

They can expand and rotate the vehicle to explore each feature in detail – and get a very real sense of what owning the vehicle would feel like.

  • Each virtual vehicle includes a different and exciting lifestyle experience, built to appeal to every buyer.
  • Each vehicle has several callouts on the most important standard features and options, such as pre-collision system, cargo capacity, AWD and more.

When you need to be able to render that in real time and present it to a user in a way they can access it quickly, a lot of that capability wasn’t possible in the past with a browser. But now we’ve brought it to market. You can view the vehicle in a more intimate way than you would get in a standard gallery online with a 360-degree configurator where you have to keep tapping the mouse. As you walk around the car, your camera and the car are tracking exactly with you so you feel that the car is actually there.”
